cen|tum language
cen|tum language «KEHN tuhm»,
one of the languages of the western division of Indo-European languages, including Greek, Italic, Celtic, and Germanic. The centum languages are characterized by their use of velar sounds such as represented by k in Kent, instead of the sibilant sounds found in corresponding words of the satem languages.
[< Latin centum hundred (because the initial letter of this word in centum languages represents the sound of c in cat, as distinguished from satem languages in which the initial letter represents the sound of c in cent)]
